Welcome to Our Journey

We are thrilled to announce the beginning of a grand project that aims to bring back a cherished piece of Butte, Montana's history. The Columbia Gardens, once a vibrant and beloved amusement park, is set to be reborn, capturing the essence and magic of its predecessor. This blog will document our journey, share historical insights, and keep you updated on our progress. Join us as we embark on this exciting adventure to revive a symbol of community and joy.

A Glimpse into the Past

The original Columbia Gardens was more than just an amusement park; it was a cultural and social hub for the people of Butte. Established in 1899 by William A. Clark, a prominent copper magnate, the Gardens quickly became a popular destination for families, tourists, and workers looking for leisure and entertainment.

Key Features of the Original Columbia Gardens:

  1. The Pavilion: A grand structure that hosted dances, concerts, and community events, serving as the heart of the Gardens .

  2. The Carousel: One of the park's most beloved attractions, featuring intricately carved wooden horses that delighted children and adults alike .

  3. The Roller Coaster: A thrilling ride that provided excitement and fun for visitors of all ages .

  4. The Gardens: Beautifully landscaped gardens with a variety of flowers, shrubs, and trees, creating a picturesque environment for picnics and strolls .

  5. The Zoo: Home to a collection of exotic animals, adding an educational aspect to the entertainment offered at the park .

  6. Children's Play Areas: Safe and enjoyable spaces where children could play, climb, and explore .

The Columbia Gardens was not just an amusement park; it was a place where memories were made, friendships were forged, and the community came together. It was affectionately known as "The Playground of the Rockies" .

The Tragic End

The Gardens thrived for decades, but in the 1970s, its future became uncertain. The site was owned by the Anaconda Company, which needed the land for mining purposes. Despite public outcry and efforts to save the park, a tragic fire in September 1973 led to its destruction. The Columbia Gardens burnt down, leaving the community heartbroken and ending an era of joy and togetherness .

The Vision for Rebuilding

Our mission is to honor the legacy of the original Columbia Gardens by creating a new space that pays homage to its history while incorporating modern elements. The rebuilt Columbia Gardens will feature:
